Fes Desert Tours Into the Golden Sahara

What if the most breathtaking moment of your Morocco trip began the second you left Fes?

Most travellers see Morocco’s imperial cities — and miss the desert entirely. Our Fes desert tours change that. In just 3 days, you cross the High Atlas Mountains, descend into the Sahara at Merzouga, ride camels at golden hour, sleep under a sky so full of stars it doesn’t feel real — then arrive in Marrakech transformed.

Not rushed like a 2-day sprint. Not over-committed like a week. 3 days is the sweet spot — and we’ve perfected every hour of it across 1,200+ tours since 2014.

Why Start From Fes?

Why a Desert Tour from Fes Is Worth Every Kilometre

Fes sits at a remarkable crossroads: east of the Atlas, closer to the Sahara than most travelers realize. A Fes desert trip is more than a detour, it is one of Morocco’s most dramatic overland journeys, snaking through cedar forests, Berber mountain villages and the lunar landscape of the Ziz Valley before the orange dunes of Merzouga call out on the horizon.

But how many days do you really need? The answer depends on your pace — and your patience. 2-day tours from Fes are fast, almost breathless. 4-day tours linger beautifully. The sweet spot for most travelers, especially those ending in Marrakech , is 3 days: enough time to experience everything without burning out.

Asara Morocco Tours has operated this route since 2014. We know every mountain pass, every good Tagine stop, and which dune to climb for the best sunrise. This is our home , and we want to share it with you.

Camel Trek at Sunset
Erg Chebbi · Sunset

Camel Trek into the Dunes

The one picture that everyone takes home. A 90-minute caravan ride on dromedaries from the edge of Merzouga to the center of Erg Chebbi, where they arrive at camp just as the sky turns saffron. Only sandals and small backpacks. The rest is kept by your driver.

01
Stargazing in the Sahara
Merzouga · Overnight

A Night in the Luxury Sahara Camp

Private tent with real beds, a bathroom, and hot water. For dinner, you have lamb tagine and fresh bread cooked over coals. After that, you can listen to Berber drumming around the fire and look up at the stars, which are so thick that you'll forget cities exist. We camp with solar power, so there are no generators or noise.

02
Sahara Sunrise Hike
Panoramic views

Sahara Sunrise Hike

Wake at 5:30 AM and climb the dunes barefoot as the desert turns from cold blue to burning gold. Nothing in travel compares to watching the Sahara receive the morning sun from the top of Erg Chebbi.

03
Tizi n'Tichka Mountain Pass
High Atlas · Day One

Crossing the Tizi n'Tichka Pass

The 2,260-meter-high mountain pass that separates Marrakech from the south is one of the most beautiful drives in North Africa. We stop at the viewpoint with a view of the whole area, go to a women's co-op that makes argan oil, and then go down to the red-earth plateau that leads to the Sahara.

04
Ait Benhaddou Ksar
UNESCO Site

Exploring Aït Benhaddou

The ksar Aït Benhaddou, which is a thousand years old, was in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. A licensed local guide takes you through the dirt paths, up to the old granary at the top, and through the filming locations that made this UNESCO site famous all over the world.

05
Todra and Dades Gorges
Day Two · Photography

Todra & Dadès Gorges

A trip to see the descendants of West African musicians who moved to the edge of the Sahara. Mint tea, a live Gnawa percussion show, and a talk about how the community has kept its musical tradition alive for almost 400 years. One of the most real cultural stops along the way.

Ask a Question
When Should You Go?

Best Time to Book Sahara Desert tour from Fes

The Sahara runs hot and cold in the most literal sense. The same desert that bakes at 42°C in July drops below 0°C on January nights — and both extremes can catch first-timers off guard. Peak Sweet Spot March–May · Oct–Nov — 20–27°C days, cool evenings. Perfect for camel rides. Book 2–3 weeks ahead.
Quiet Season Dec–Feb — fewer tourists, dramatic light, near-freezing nights. Pack layers. Great for solo travelers.
Approach with Care Jun–Aug — above 40°C. Camel treks at 6AM only. Not recommended for families or first-timers.
💡 Our verdict: If you can only choose one window — October. Golden light, quiet dunes, and perfect temperatures in the morning and night.

01
Pricing Explained

What Does Fes Desert Tour Actually Cost?

For Example 3-day Fes desert tour ranges from $160 to $450+ per person across the market—a gap wide enough to include both cramped 17-seat minibuses and private luxury 4×4s. Here's how to read the numbers.
Shared Group (max 17)
From $165 /person
Private 4×4 (3 Max)
From $310 /person
Luxury Camp Upgrade +$55 /person add-on
What moves the price:
📅 Season — Mar–May & Sep–Oct add ~10–15%
👥 Group size — smaller = higher per-person cost
🏕 Camp tier — standard vs. en-suite luxury tent
🚗 Vehicle — minivan vs. private 4×4
⚠️ Red flag: Tours under $100 for 3 days almost always cut corners on accommodation or skip the Aït Benhaddou stop. Always check what's included.

02
Group vs Private

What's the difference between a Shared and Private Fes desert trip?

Shared Group:
✓ Best price (from $165)
✓ Meet fellow travellers
✓ Fixed departure schedule
✗ Fixed pace & stops
✗ Max 17 — but can't choose who
✗ Less flexible on timing
Private Tour :
✓ Your pace, your stops
✓ Ideal for families & couples
✓ Flexible departure time
✓ Honeymoon upgrades available
✗ Higher per-person cost
✗ Requires advance booking
Best for: Couples, families, honeymoons, photography enthusiasts
💡 Our verdict: Travelling as 2 people? The price gap between shared and private is often only $30–60/person — and the experience difference is enormous.

03
Food on Tour

What Will You Eat in our Desert Tours from Fes?

One of the unexpected highlights of the Fes–Sahara route is Moroccan food. You will eat well – if you know what you are in for.
☕ Breakfast (Included) Mint tea, msemen flatbreads, honey, amlou (almond butter), and fresh orange juice Camp and guesthouse.
🥘 Lunch (Not Included · ~$5–10) Stop at local restaurants en route — slow-cooked tajines, harira soup, kefta. Budget $7 per meal comfortably.
🌙 Dinner at Desert Camp (Included with Deluxe) A full Berber meal: salads, couscous, tajine, fresh fruits. Under the stars by candlelight. Vegetarian upon request.
🌱 Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free diets easily catered for – please advise at booking Halal food is everywhere.
💡 Budget tip: Carry $25–35 cash per day for lunches, snacks, and bottled water. Card acceptance is rare outside cities.

04
Physical Demand

Is This Fes to Sahara Itinerary Difficult?

Short answer: No — this is not a trekking tour. The Fes to Sahara route is designed for all fitness levels. You spend most of your time in a comfortable vehicle. Here's the honest breakdown:
Driving Easy Comfortable A/C vehicle. Winding mountain roads — some passengers get motion-sick (bring tablets).
Camel Trek Easy Guided at a slow walking pace. Suitable for children (4+), older adults, and non-athletic travelers. Duration: ~1 hour.
Dune Climb Moderate Optional. Soft sand makes it harder than it looks—20–40 min to summit. Totally worth it. Sandboards are available to slide back down.
Aït Benhaddou Walk Easy Gentle 45-min walk on uneven cobblestones. Suitable for most mobility levels. Not wheelchair accessible.
💡 Bottom line: If you can walk 2–3 km at a slow pace, you can do this tour. We've guided travellers aged 6 to 78 successfully.

05

    Questions

    Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to know before booking , from what to pack to how to get from Fes to Sahara desert.

The drive from Fes to Merzouga is about 7-8 hours (around 550 km) with stops. Our tours leave at 7:00 AM to be there in time for the sunset camel trek. Ifrane, Azrou, Midelt and the Ziz Valley are all on the route and each stage is scenic, so the drive seems much shorter than it sounds.

Our Fes desert tour includes: transport in a comfortable 4×4, English-speaking Berber guide,  camel trek, guided visit to Aït Benhaddou, daily breakfast, and hotel drop-off in Marrakech. Lunches and dinners are not included (except in our luxury package).

It is possible to do a 2-day Fes desert tour, but it is really rushed, with most of both days spent in the car and only a few hours at the dunes. I would only recommend it to those who are not flexible at all. If you can spare 3 days, the experience is much richer.

Yes – our group tours are shared and operate daily in high season (March-May, September-October) with up to 8 passengers. Smaller groups mean more flexibility and a much more personal experience than your typical 16-seat bus tours. Call us for departure dates and availability.

From October to April, the desert is at its most comfortable, with daytime highs between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius and cool, clear nights. Photographers are busiest in March and November. We leave at dawn during these months, which are possible but hot. The Sahara is open all year, and our luxury desert camps are comfortable in all kinds of weather.

Yes, we arrange round trip Fes to Merzouga tours 2 days and 3 days for those who want to return to Fes. The 2-day return option includes an overnight stay in the dunes and returns on the same Atlas route. Prices as for the Fes – Marrakech option.

The 3-day private tour is perfect for families – you control the pace, the stops and meal times. Camel rides are safe for children (the guides lead the camels by rope at walking pace). For families, the 3-day Fes to Marrakech route is recommended: varied scenery, manageable daily driving distances and memorable experiences for all ages.

Must-do 7-day Morocco itinerary: Days 1–2 explore Fes medina; Day 3-5 Our 3-day desert tour to Marrakech through Merzouga; Day 6 Explore Marrakech Day 7 Fly out Marrakech Airport This includes the three great cities of Morocco and the Sahara in one efficient loop – our most popular itinerary for first-time visitors.
