Most people start a Sahara trip from Marrakech and double back. Instead of a there-and-back loop, you cross the whole of southern Morocco , and the 3 day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech packs in everything the longer trips do, without the wasted backtracking.

Fes to Marrakech in 3 Days Detailed Itinerary

Day by day, what you'll see, drive, eat, and sleep under. This is our most-booked Fes-to-Marrakech itinerary, refined over 900+ departures since 2014.

3 Days Fes to Marrakech — The Classic Sahara

🐪 Best for: First-timers who want the Middle Atlas, the iconic orange dunes, a camel ride & luxury camp night — ending in Marrakech
1

Day 1 — Fes → Ifrane → Azrou Cedar Forest → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga (sunset camel trek & camp)

We collect you from your Fes riad around 8am in a private A/C vehicle. Climbing out of the Saiss plain, the first stop is Ifrane — Morocco's improbably alpine town, nicknamed "the Switzerland of Morocco." Continue into the cedar forests of Azrou, the largest in Morocco, where wild Barbary macaques gather at the roadside. Lunch in Midelt, the apple capital, then south through the spectacular Ziz Valley and gorges — a ribbon of palmeries below ochre cliffs — past Erfoud and Rissani. You reach the edge of the Sahara as the light turns gold, mount your camel for a sunset trek into Erg Chebbi, and arrive at your Berber desert camp for a tagine dinner, drumming and a sky thick with stars.

Day 2 — Merzouga Sunrise → Rissani → Todra Gorge → Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs → Dades Valley

Wake before dawn to watch the sun set the dunes alight in amber and rose — one of the great sights in travel. After breakfast and a short camel ride back, we drive via the old caravan town of Rissani toward the dramatic 300-metre walls of the Todra Gorge, where you can walk between the cliffs. The afternoon runs through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to your overnight stay in a Dades Valley kasbah hotel, set among red-rock canyons and palm groves.

Day 3 — Dades → Valley of Roses → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Tizi n'Tichka → Marrakech (arrival ~6pm)

A relaxed morning through the Valley of Roses (Kelaat M'Gouna) brings you to Ouarzazate, "the door of the desert" and home to the Atlas Film Studios. The day's centrepiece is the UNESCO World Heritage kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — the earthen citadel you've seen in Gladiator and Game of Thrones — where we stop to explore on foot. Then the grand finale: the switchbacks of the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) across the High Atlas, with panoramic stops, before descending into Marrakech by late afternoon. No surprise drop-offs — we deliver you to your riad or hotel door.

Why a 3-Day Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech Is the Sweet Spot

The single biggest question we get is: "Is 3 days really enough to do Fes to Marrakech via the desert?" After running this crossing hundreds of times, our honest answer is yes , and the geography explains why. Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes sit roughly 470 km southeast of Fes and 560 km east of Marrakech. A 3-day tour reaches the true Sahara, gives you one full night in the dunes, and still delivers you to Marrakech rested. A 2-day version simply can't reach Merzouga from Fes; a 4-day one adds a second desert night you may not need.

Run from Fes, the 3-day itinerary threads the alpine town of Ifrane, the cedar forests of Azrou (home to wild Barbary macaques), the palm-lined Ziz Valley, a sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi, the Todra Gorge, the red cliffs of the Dades Valley, the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, and the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass on the way down into Marrakech.

Experiences

The best excursions on a tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

Every multi-day itinerary we run is a string of unforgettable moments. These are the six experiences travelers tell us about months later, the reasons our guests come back to Morocco a second and third time.

Camel Trek at Sunset
Erg Chebbi · Sunset

Camel Trek into the Dunes

The one picture that everyone takes home. A 90-minute caravan ride on dromedaries from the edge of Merzouga to the center of Erg Chebbi, where they arrive at camp just as the sky turns saffron. Only sandals and small backpacks. The rest is kept by your driver.

01
Stargazing in the Sahara
Merzouga · Overnight

A Night in the Luxury Sahara Camp

Private tent with real beds, a bathroom, and hot water. For dinner, you have lamb tagine and fresh bread cooked over coals. After that, you can listen to Berber drumming around the fire and look up at the stars, which are so thick that you'll forget cities exist. We camp with solar power, so there are no generators or noise.

02
Sahara Sunrise Hike
Panoramic views

Sahara Sunrise Hike

Wake at 5:30 AM and climb the dunes barefoot as the desert turns from cold blue to burning gold. Nothing in travel compares to watching the Sahara receive the morning sun from the top of Erg Chebbi.

03
Tizi n'Tichka Mountain Pass
High Atlas

Crossing the Tizi n'Tichka Pass

The 2,260-meter-high mountain pass that separates Marrakech from the south is one of the most beautiful drives in North Africa. We stop at the viewpoint with a view of the whole area, go to a women's co-op that makes argan oil, and then go down to the red-earth plateau that leads to the Sahara.

04
Ait Benhaddou Ksar
UNESCO Site

Exploring Aït Benhaddou

The ksar Aït Benhaddou, which is a thousand years old, was in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. A licensed local guide takes you through the dirt paths, up to the old granary at the top, and through the filming locations that made this UNESCO site famous all over the world.

05
Todra and Dades Gorges
Photography

Todra & Dadès Gorges

Two of Morocco's most photographed canyons on a single morning. 300-metre limestone walls in Todra, the serpentine switchback road in Dadès, and lunch in a Berber village café where the tagine is served in the shade of a walnut tree.

Our Approach

Why choose Asara Morocco Tours for your Marrakech desert adventure?

We are a Morocco-based operator, not a reseller. Every itinerary is run by our own team, our own vehicles, and driver-guides who've been with us for an average of seven years.

Certified, Born-Local Guides

Every guide leading our tours from Marrakech grew up in the southern regions they guide through. They are not reciting information — they are sharing their home. Ministry of Tourism certified, multilingual, and passionate about Berber culture, kasbah history, and desert ecology.

Fully Private, No Shared Groups

Your vehicle, your itinerary, your pace. You will never be placed in a group with strangers or hurried past a gorge because another passenger has a different schedule. Every Morocco desert tour Marrakech we run is exclusive to you and your travel companions.

Custom Itineraries Built Around You

Photography-focused? We adjust internal schedules for dawn light on the dunes. Travelling with children? We modify pacing and select family-appropriate activities. On your honeymoon? We arrange private dinners and exclusive tent configurations at the desert camp. Every booking begins with a consultation.

We use kasbah hotels, traditional ksour guesthouses, and a private luxury desert camp at Erg Chebbi — chosen for character, location, and quality rather than star count. Properties we would recommend to our own families.

People Also Ask

Know before you book your Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour.

The practical details we wish every traveler knew before the trip , straight from the team that drives this Fes-to-Marrakech route every week. No surprises, just an effortless start.

Pickup & start time

Free pickup from your Fes riad or hotel, around 8am (a little earlier in winter so we reach Merzouga before sunset). If your riad sits deep in the medina where cars can't enter, we'll meet you at the nearest accessible gate.

01

Day 1 is the long drive

Fes to Merzouga is about 470 km (7–8 hours) with stops, so Day 1 is the longest. Days 2 and 3 are far more relaxed. If you're sensitive on winding mountain passes, bring motion-sickness tablets just in case.

02

Carry some cash (dirham)

Lunches, drinks, monument entry fees and tips are paid in cash. ATMs are reliable in Fes, Midelt, Tinghir and Marrakech, but scarce in between — withdraw enough before you leave the Middle Atlas.

03

One small bag for the camp

This is a one way tour so all your luggage travels with you and is dropped off in Marrakech. On the camel you only take a small overnight bag to the desert camp – leave the rest safely in the vehicle.

04

Pack for two climates

You'll cross cold Atlas passes and hot desert in a day. Bring a warm layer for the night (the Sahara can get close to 0°C in winter) and light, breathable clothing and a scarf for sun and sand during the day.

05

Dietary needs are easy

Vegetarian, vegan, halal and allergy-friendly food is no problem in the camp and hotels, just let us know when you book so we can inform the kitchens beforehand.

06

Tipping is customary, not required

A small tip for your driver-guide and the camp team at the end of the trip is appreciated but entirely your call. At camp we don't ask for "extra" fees – you pay for what you booked.

07

Still deciding? Speak to a local.

Our Marrakech team replies in English, French, and Spanish — usually within two hours. No bots, no call centres.

    Questions

FAQ — 3 Days Tour from Fes to Marrakech

Still have a question we haven't answered? Our team in Marrakech typically replies within two hours.

Yes, 3 days is the minimum to go from Fes to the real Sahara (Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes), sleep one night in a desert camp, and still cross the country one-way to Marrakech. You can’t get from Fes to Merzouga in a 2 day trip, the dunes are just too far.

Approximately 1,100 – 1,200 km over 3 days with driving days of 5 – 8 hours mixed with photo stops, walks, meals and the camel trek. Day 1 (Fes → Merzouga) is the longest. Days 2 & 3 are more chill.

Our shared small-group tours start at $225 per person. Private tours start around $390 per person (based on 2 travelers — less per person for larger groups). A luxury camp upgrade adds about +100$. Prices include transport, accommodation, the camel trek and the meals listed.

One night in a Berber desert camp at the foot of the Merzouga dunes (standard or luxury en-suite tents) and one night in a kasbah hotel in the Dades Valley. The tour ends in Marrakech, where you'll spend your following nights.

Yes. We run the exact same route from Marrakech to Fes as well. Pickup, drop-off, price and inclusions are identical — pick the direction that matches your flights.

We offer both. Shared tours are capped at 8 travelers per 4×4 (usually 4–6 in practice). Private tours are just you and your party in the vehicle. We never combine large bus groups — that's a core promise.

Yes. All our drivers are licensed, English-speaking Berber guides. As a Berber-owned company we've completed 900+ tours since 2014 with a 5.0-star rating from 82+ Tripadvisor reviews, built largely on solo women and families. Children of all ages are welcome.

Light layers for the day, a warm jacket for desert nights (even in summer it cools down fast), a scarf for sand, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, comfortable closed shoes, a small day backpack, a power bank and your passport. Leave large luggage at your Fes riad — you only need an overnight bag for the camp.

Three options: (1) direct train Fes → Marrakech (~7 hrs, no desert); (2) CTM or Supratours bus (longer, cheaper, no desert); (3) the 3-day desert tour — the only one that includes the Sahara. Most travelers take the desert route one way and fly or train back.
